Babble Talk: Elmo's Heart of Gold

kevin clashWas your child's first word "Elmo?"  If so you aren't alone. There's a reason kids love Elmo so much and that reason has largely to do with the man behind (inside? underneath?) the little red puppet, Kevin Clash.

In her latest Babble column, Jennifer Baumgardner writes that Clash's book, My Life as a Furry Red Monster, is E.T.-level tear-jerking when it comes to Elmo's ability to bring joy.

I found myself close to tears many times as I read her article/interview, and I don't think I'd be able to make it through the book without an entire box of Kleenex at my side.

Clash talks of his life-long love of puppets and performing, his family triumphs and struggles, and Elmo's ability to bring joy to children even in the most dire situations. Whatever you think of Elmo, his kid-appeal is undeniable. I think I love him a little more after reading the article.

I love everything about Kevin Clash. There are a couple of cute interviews with him (and Elmo!) around... one is on a British show ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxW6-_Qx1JA ) and the other is in the middle of "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me", an NPR show ( http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6731399  -- you need to wait until about 20 minutes into the show).

Thanks for posting about his book!

Kevin Clash indeed kicks ass. If you've never heard him do a radio interview as Elmo when the smart ass DJ's try and get Elmo to discuss less than kid friendly topics, you are missing out.

Secondly, my kid's first word thus far has been "NO!". We're so proud.....

Haha Kelly, I felt the same way!  I try very much to hate Elmo but I just can't.  I hate almost every other children's character except the Teletubbies, but I can't hate Elmo.  Or any of the other Sesame Streeters, for that matter.

It's probably because I grew up on a steady diet of Sesame Street and The Muppet Show.  Thanks to the magic of DVD, I can ensure the same for Jillian.  There will be no Dora in my house, I can guarantee you that.
