Disney More than Frozen Body; Now with More Racism!

Hope you didn't already book those travel plans to Disney World this summer! Because this video is an eye opener. The Media Education Foundation explores the darker side of the Disney Empire -- the all trusted, all innocent, all knowing media conglomeration.

From highly sexualized female cartoon leads that haven't changed much in appearance since the 1940s to entire movies about Africa without any black people in them to the idea that it's a woman's job to overlook a violent, brooding beast to find a true prince, the video uncovers a not-so flattering side of the happiest mega-corporation in the world.

It's definitely worth a look if you're not afraid of being locked away in the Disney Vault ....

Unless you work at Strollerderby, and you need any excuse you can get to Disney-bash.. even if it is a 10 year old video.

Whatever....

Like I said before, I have all the videos and Disney is our vacation destination of choice.  I believe that if my children are brought up in a house that isn't racist or sexist, an animated movie isn't going to change that.  You can use the movie itself as an opening to having a talk with your children about how and why to treat people etc.

And as far as how women look, you haven't noticed how Hollywood and society as a whole embraces beauty and size????

Please....Disney is no pioneer in that realm.

I've gotta go......Peter Pan's a calling.

Wow. That's a response to video, and to the comments.

I did grow up with Disney, but I wasn't raised by it. I think that is the critical distinction. There ARE children who are set in front of the TV, and the TV becomes their mother, their father, their nanny, their teacher, their best friend. This is not something we can blame on Disney. We all know that they are just another corporation, despite our cherished childhood memories.

This is something that needs to be the responsibility of the parents. If you are worried that your children are getting the "wrong message" from Disney stories, talk to them, and make sure they see the other side. You should be doing that anyway.

Kids don't always process things the same way as we think they might, so talking and finding out what they thing and feel about things is very important.

Also, despite the fact that I don't always think that Disney's messages aren't blurred by other suggestive things, that lady was WAAAY harsh about Beauty and the Beast! It was one of the last "New Disney" movies that I actually liked! And that story's been around for ages! Disney just did it again.

That's my only real complaint with the video. I think the rest is pretty true, but it's not something we can be surprised about or hold against a for-profit company. After all, they're not your kids' parents.

Adding another voice to defend Beauty and the Beast.  I too think its one of the few movies with a strong female character.  Belle is presented as a smart, brave, well-read young woman who is able to make choices for herself.  She values family and does what is right.   Kind and compassionate, she is able to see past the beast's rage (which could actually be viewed as PTSD due to his spell-imposed imprisonment).

Of course - as with many things ... balance is key ... bring in media from other sources, and above all else, your own time and discussion into your child's life, and they will hopefully come out well rounded.  Teach them how to view media critically, and they will be able to appreciate bias when they encounter it.
