My Hymen Belongs To Daddy

Posted by Patti

I guess my theme for the day is virginity. That and being squicked out. I don't really know what to say about the concept of purity balls, but this piece in Glamour pretty much sums it up: little girls get all dressed up with their daddies and go to a nice prom-like dance, where father and daughter sign pledges committing themselves to the preservation of her womanly flower.

(retch)

Some of these loving (CREEPY!) fathers even give their daughters jewelry, rings, even, to cement the deal. Yeah. It's a fully realized marketing campaign, complete with swag

Is it me, or is making such a big deal about not-sex as unhealthy as making a big deal about sex? On one extreme, you have young women being influenced by media and peer groups to believe that their purpose is sexual. On the other extreme, you have young women being all but directly informed by their fathers that their most important resource is their virginity. I mean, when was the last time you heard about a father-daughter ball for girls who got an A in history or made the basketball team? Where are the mother-son purity balls?

Nothing has creeped me out today as much as the title of this post.

Sick.  Great point asking why they are not celebrating that A in history or making the team, let alone holding "mother-son purity balls."  Though perhaps they are... we have become an overly-celebratory culture.(Ha!)  I am (morbidly) fascinated by this - who are these people???

I just watched the documentary "The Education of Shelby Knox" about a Lubbock, Texas (home of the highest rate of teen pregnancy and STDs) high school girl who fights for real sex education in the schools.  Interestingly, she has taken (and is faithful to) a True Love Waits pledge.  I think the most amazing thing of all is to see how her coservative parents stand by her while she takes on issues that clearly make them uncomfortable.

Alicia, thanks for reminding me how much I want to see that film. It sounds like Shelby has the right point of view here: making a pledge of this kind with her eyes and her mind open.

I'm simultaneously retching over the info in this article and laughing at its URL.  Ew, indeed.

Good job. :)

My oldest is autistic.  He learned in his interpersonal relationships class about genital warts.  Since he doesn't want them, he says he won't be having sex soon.  My younger two are a different story.  they are only 2 and 4 now, but I'll be having the talk with them one day and will tell them to wait.  And they are all boys.  Realistically, they probably won't, so I'll tell them that if they have to be crazy and play russian roulette, at least use a condom.  I was lucky enough to get pregnant using the pill and a condom the third time I had sex.  :-)
