Baby Einstein Founder Flanks First Lady at State of the Union

baby einsteinJulie Aigner-Clark, the founder of the the Baby Einstein company was an invited guest of George W. Bush during last night's State of the Union address, one of the "uninspiring choice(s)" made by Dubya according to Margaret Carlson of Bloomberg.com.

For those that don't know, Aigner-Clark developed porn-quality (in terms of production values) programs showing spinning toys and freaky puppets set to jejune music. The goal of the videos is to stimulate babies and turn them into, well, "Baby Einsteins," but we all know that's bullshit

Tekla of the Silicon Valley Moms Blog had a more, ahem, pointed criticism of the choice:

This is the woman that convinced parents that it's perfectly OK to prop up babies in front of the television because it's educational (they don't even have to be old enough to sit)! The woman that found the perfect combination of music and colors to hypnotize a baby into complete docility, to ensure that the next generation really will be passive observers, not interacting or caring much about the people around them or their environment. Or, perhaps, this is the woman that has found the way to raise the perfect Republican...

As Tekla says, "at least we know what Bush watches on TV."

i was taken aback by this ... almost as disturbing as the subway rescue guy blowing kisses to everyone in the room.

is this an indication that she is one of the 34% of americans who support bush, or simply that she will do anything to get on tv ?

I knew that prissy bitch looked familiar. His whole speech was nauseating enough with out all the odd choices to have in the room as "invited guests".

Whatever you think about Baby Einstein, nobody held a gun to the millions of women who swore by the product. There are thousands of products out there for kids that are pretty much worthless, but it's my job as a parent to choose what's best for my kids. Kudos to the woman for seeing an opportunity and taking it. As for those parents who do choose to use such a product, well, it's none of my business how they choose to raise their kids. We all raise our kids differently and quite frankly who am I and who are you to be so judgemental. Don't parents have a hard enough job without having someone like you tell them they're doing it wrong. BTW, how are your kids doing after watching tv for an hour this morning???

Laura12, did you want to share your sentiments with the commenters above who agreed with the post? Or just me?

Wouldn't it be fair to say that the people quoted in the post have the harshest opinion of Ms Aigner-Clark? I just called her videos porny. Oh, and her claims bullshit.  But actually, the blogger I linked to did a better job of that.

Thanks for inquiring after my children.  After watching an hour's worth of TV this morning (shocking and unheard of, I know) they both fell asleep an hour before their bedtime because 1) they woke up so early, and 2) they rode their bikes around the neighborhood for a good hour right before dinner. They were tired.

We used the Baby Einstein videos a bit during the lads' first year as a last resort -- for us, not them, during those times when it was either turn on the TV or go on a shooting spree.  I never thought they taught much, but they certainly aided with parental sanity.  They actually bored the lads.

There's a Washington Post item on this topic today that is pretty critical of the videos:
