I was THRILLED when my son finally turned 2 years old so that I could drop the month thing. I'll probably do the 2 1/2 years old thing when appropriate, but I'm done with the counting of the months!

I have always been terrible at remembering (or really even caring about) numbers. I was fine telling people how many months old my son was until just a little after 12 months. After that I just rounded up or down to 1, 1.5, 2....

I never really found it annoying when people asked my sons age. I know that when i ask people how old their baby is, its because its cute to remember back to when my son was small and what he was like at about that age. Or, when my son was a baby, I would ask people because I was excited to see what my son might be able to do when he became a certain age. It was never to judge the other person's kid. My kid is brillian (!) but he didn't say anything beyond mommy and daddy until he was 3 (and then he was talking in complex sentances); so believe me, I know that kids develope differently!

One funny story: when my son was really young and we were still counting in weeks, I had to scheduel a doctor's appointment. The nurse asked how many weeks old Nico was and I said I wasn't sure but he was 3 months old. There was silence and then the nurse said in disbelief: You don't know the age of your own baby?

I was so pissed!

I stopped using months after my son turned 1. Because really, after he is 1 years old, he isnt "so many" months, IMO. You are NOT alone in that annoying thing that people do. Just tell me that the kid will be 3 in June or 2 in April or WHATEVER. If you give me the number of months the kid is, I will give you a blank stare. That blank stare means I am trying desperately in my head to calculate how old your kid actually is. Math is NOT my forte.

And you are NOT lame and your kid is adorable at 21 months.

I agree with most of the previous posters ... stop announcing months when you're comfortable saying "almost 2." Until then, they really do change so fast!

Well definitely at least till 2 .. my son is 22 months and I use it because at this stage each month makes a world of difference between a baby who is sitting, standing, rolling over, teething, blah blah...

also, its so weird to count in years when you have only one year and something to count... at least after two years its a plural..

and i think its a mommy thing. no one else cares exactly how many months my son is, but i do and that is why i do it.

just like i may not care for something that a non-parent has to say but will hear it out politely because obviously its important to them even if i dont understand it!!!

It's ultimately up to you. How much do you feel like explaining to strangers? If it is someone that really matters, they should know how old your child is. So other parents gloat or feel like crap about their kid, they should realize that the guidelines out there are just generalizations. All kids develop at their own rates.

I don't think it makes you lame at all if you do it. Drop the month/day/hour/minute/second/milisecond thing when you're ready.

I think you can totally use months until age 2 if you want to... BUT if you don't want to, no one is going to care if you're like "almost two" or "one and a half" or "one and three quarters" or "who the hell cares, would you LOOK at that adorable face!!!" or should I say that no one SHOULD care... because probably someone will. but whatever. age ain't nothin' but a number baby...

oh that is funny stuff b/c just last week, I got the "how old is steven?" question and since i couldn't really remember, i blurted out 22 months. then the mom (who must have been a math major) was like "oh an april birthday..."

so im like "oh no did i say 22 months? i meant 21 months b/c his birthday is may 11th." now im a bad mom b/c i dont know how old my son is. HA.

so i was like screw this - im switching to almost 2. i like that almost.

I used to 'not get it' until I had my own baby, then I totally got it - why we talk in weeks, and months. And I think it's totally normal and if fact, necessary, to do that - at least until they are 2 years old. Then it seems to stop... my son will be 19 months old next week! And congrats on your little guy turning 21 months! The first two years, so many firsts happen (like all of our firsts in high school, you know?) so I think it's okay to talk in terms of months. But yeah, I would start getting confused after 24 months. I suck at math!

A little girl I babysit (she's 4), her mom has decided to add decimals to the kid's age cuz she'd get too impatient for her birthday, and it never seemed like she was getting older.

This way she can say "I'm 4.6 years old!" and sound REALLY smart.

The month thing annoys me anyway. I think after they near 2, it's time to give it up.

ok. i would say after a year it starts going like this [[in my opinion anyway this is what i am going to start saying]]

he is one.

then he is 1 and a half

then after the three months after one and a half it goes he will be 2 in ----then say what ever month he turns two.

in your case i would say "Archer is almost two." and then add a little "yay".

Really 1 1/2 is when I stopped telling people how many months my kids were.

Anything over 24 months makes the parent look goofy. (In my opinion).

I think the month-by-month wound down for my guys when they were about Archer's age, in part because I kept losing track. (I'm too tired these days to count past 20.) They were 19 mo, 20 mo, 21 mo, then "almost two", "2", and now they're "almost 2 1/2".

Plus, they know to say "two" when someone says "How old are you?" (They also say "two" if you ask "How are you?")

I only really have an answer to the first part. After 2 - although I can tell you how many months K is, and she'll be four next month, as well as B, who is 7 1/2. We did the math lately because B wanted to know.

I have a friend is constantly bothered by the fact that I will say one little girl I watch is 18 months ("why don't you just say she's one!") but the changes between 1-2 are so great that its worth it to count.

We stopped using months somewhere between 18-21 months. We used halves until she was two and a half. Now it's either "she's 4" or "she'll be 5 in August" (once August nears).
