Knocked Up

Sick and Tired

After six weeks at daycare, Axel's caught his first cold.  His nose is in snot-production overdrive.  The under-arm temperature taking technique revealed a fever of 100 - 101.  I've subjected him to temperature taking a few times a week since his birth - his forehead always feels hot to me - but this time, his belly radiated heat as well.  I've been hit by the same cold, but my aching head and sore throat doesn't bother me nearly as much as my poor boy's loud, boogery breathing.

A sad, not so little cough rolls out of him, his cheeks are flushed, and he's doubled up on his naps.  Apparently, viruses are the true daytime sleep solution, not blackout shades or white noise or putting him down still a little awake or moving him into his own room. At night, he wakes up with his nose chock-full of snot, gasping and shrieking.  I'd yell, too, if I woke up unable to breathe and didn't understand why.

He hates having his nose wiped, and the only thing worse than not being able to breathe while sleeping or nursing is having his nose sprayed with saline and suctioned.  I didn't realize how deviously wiggly he'd become until having to break out the bulb syringe again a few times a day.  All babies hate the bulb syringe - it's like they tell one another at the hospital to watch out for a little blue plastic device designed to suck out baby souls.

All in all, though, he's relatively cheerful.  I've been able to distract him with toys, our pets, or sitting in the shade on the back porch, feeling the breeze and looking at the birds that fly past.  He'll get caught up watching something for about fifteen minutes and then he'll yell and fuss, as though he suddenly remembers he's not feeling well and wants to make sure I know:  "Look, a bird!  How does it make those things flap like that?  Oh, hey!  Did I tell you I feel like crap?  I just remembered.  I'm achy and sick!  Listen!"

Yes, I know, I want to tell him - you're dripping snot on my breast while you nurse.  I remember the part of the La Leche League book that mentions of the super-charged antibody germ-fighting action of breastmilk, but I missed the part where it warns that you'll become a human Kleenex.

The bulb syringe. Just hearing it makes me shudder. There have been times when, once the bulb syringe has been rinsed off and put away, I've wanted to sit down and cry myself.

I totally know your pain. Jane has had colds on and off since she started daycare six months ago - and when she gets a cough, she hangs on to it forever! It's gotten to the point that if I'm around someone with a cold, I'm more concerned with not catching it so I don't pass it on to her - I don't even think about myself. I just hate when she's sick! I hope he feels better, stat!

I hated when my daughter got her first fever. Of course that fever very quickly spiked to 105, so it was somewhat terrifying. Turned out she had a very stubborn double ear infection that needed two courses of antibiotics. My 8 month old whirling dervish went from playing and squealing and trying to climb out of her play yard, to lying very still, sleeping a lot and looking up at me too sick to even cry. It broke my heart. But once she bounced back, I have to admit I kind of missed the calm moments.

Don't forget to check your shirt for snot.  I am constantly noticing (ya know, once I'm already at work) that my sleeve got smeared.  :(

I have promised my daughter that when she learns how to blow her nose, we will burn the bulb syringe together. We both HATE that thing for different reasons!

I have found that the little plug-in vaporizers work wonders for nighttime sleeping with colds. Pedia Care makes them. The replacement vaporizer pads are pricey, but worth it!

Poor boo boo!  I hope he gets better soon.  It's so sad when they are listless and cranky like that.

I also found the plug-in vaporizers to work like a charm.  My daughter was born on November 15th and has 2 colds already, even with breastfeeding.  I have yet to find anything that works better for nighttime and naps!  Hope Axel feels better soon!

I second the tip on the plug in vaporizor. I have used the Vicks one and it is great. Kind of covers the smell of the diaper pail too if it needs to be emptied. But they really help keep the nose clearer - not clear, but clear-er. And I found out today that one should check one's butt for dog hair in addition to shoulders and arms for snot, and the front of the shirt for suntan lotion smear. I may end up getting dressed at work from now on.

When the Nipper caught her first cold I put her to sleep in her car seat so her head would be elevated, seemed to work pretty good.  Good luck, I feel your pain sister!

It's kind of crazy, my boy actually seems to understand and welcome the nasal aspirator (aka booger snagler). He didn't always, but these days, he seems fascinated by it. And when I'm done snagling his little boogers, he smiles at me like, "Thanks, Mom, it's good to breathe again." But my boy is odd like that.

I was going to recommend the hot steam Vicks humidifier, too. Pour A LOT of that liquid into it and there's nothing better. You have to add salt to the water, too, to make it steam faster.

Kisses to your little sickie. Hope he feels better soon.
