Knocked Up

The Heartbreak of Sciatica

Sciatica doesn't seem like a real word to me.  Every time I type it, I have to run spell check.  But if the word doesn't seem real, the nerve itself is determined not to let me forget about it.

It started out as mild numbness - my leg would tingle and feel odd to the touch whenever I walked for longer than 15 minutes.  Then, the numbness mixed with a burning feeling, like I'd slathered my left thigh in too much Icy Hot.  Eventually, the aching pain kicked in.  It happens while I walk, when I stand for too long, if I sit with my weight on my left side, and it's started to drive me batty.

A (very friendly) nurse from my doctor's office explained that the sciatic nerve often gets pinched in pregnancy, due to the expansion of veins (or is it arteries?  or both? I can't remember ) during pregnancy, shifting alignment of the hips, and loosening of ligaments, and, she chirped, it usually goes away after the baby is born.  I guess it's good that I won't have to deal with this for the rest of my life, but 18 more weeks of this does not sound at all pleasant.  I can take Tylenol, but (at this point) the pain is more of a jack-in-the-box random surprise (oooh, when will it happen next?) than a constant ache, so it just doesn't make sense, and I'd rather not take any if I don't really have to.  I can also use a heating pad, but in the summer heat wave we've been having, the mere mention of a heating pad makes me feel more miserable.  After a few weeks of this, I went to see a prenatal masseuse that told me the baby is hanging out on my left side, grinding down on my nerve.  Just one more thing I can use to guilt trip the baby when he/she is a snot-nosed fifteen-year-old missing curfew.  The massage - during which the music playing was the scores for Lord of the Rings and Last of the Mohicans, neither of which seem like relaxing movies, what with all the battle scenes - did seem to help lessen the sciatica for now.

At least it's not bed rest.  That's my new pregnancy mantra to put everything in to perspective.  At least it's not bed rest, it's just tingly, burning throbbing in my left leg.

I had the same problem about a month ago. I am due in November as well. I went to the chiropractor and it worked wonders. I was good after about two visits. Thats my suggestion. Just make sure you go to someone that has done chiro care on pregnant people before. You don't want to be their test dummy.

Both pregnancies, I've felt the same crippling ache seconds after the pee stick turned positive. Mine, also in the left side. I've done physical therapy, thermapads, tried to stretch it out, massage it out--nothing helps. And the most painful position is sitting. Which you are almost always doing. At least I am. The only comfortable position is lying down.

I can confirm that it does go away the minute you give birth. So, hang in there. I'm curious, are you having a boy or a girl?

I'm crossing my fingers that I remain pain-free. However, my mom (in her fifties) often gets sciatic pain, and the thing that helps her is tequila. Too bad that same remedy can't be used on us pregos.

On the (albeit kind of lame) upside, you have an actual diagnosis with a Very Official-sounding name to use as justification for frequent massages. And maybe see if your health insurance will pay for some of those...

Hang in there. I literally felt a rush of normalcy return when my son was out of my uterus--it was just the pressure of his weight leaving me, but it was noticable and wonderful.

I remember laughing hysterically while registering at Babies-R-Us because the shooting pain in my bum and down my leg was so bad that I had to crouch in the isle repeatedly until it let up.  At least I was laughing!

I am 40 weeks pregnant with my second.  I have had sciatica off and on since the middle of pregnancy.  It totally depends on where the kid is laying.  My nurse practicioner told me to ice the pain as heat would make it worse.  The only true cure I found was swimming.  There is nowhere else on this earth that you are weightless.  It has relieved all my aches and pains like nothing else.

I guess different things work for different people (duh!). I spent a small fortune on a chiropractor with no relieve from my sciatica when I was pregnant. Then I saw a massage therapist and viola--a great reduction in pain. One thing my guy recommended that also helped was to NOT sit on a couch--go for a chair.

I did a lot of Yoga when I was prego.  There was a squat that is called a goddes squat.  I had to do it sitting on a block and as I got bigger on a short stool or the bottom step of the stairs.  You squat with feet flat at a comfortable distance apart then put your hands together (prayer pose), put your elbows to the insides of your knees and press your legs apart.  this brought an incredible amount of releif for the sciatic pain in my hips and leg.  I spent a gresat deal of my labor in this position as well.
