Hugh Laurie Dishes On Parenting From Across The Pond

After 5 seasons of House, Hugh Laurie is starting to wonder what kind of toll his career and his superstitions have taken on his kids.

“I worry about parenting at this sort of distance, but they are being so generous and so cool about it that - I mean, it might be because they’re English, and they won’t reveal their psychological damage until they’re in their late forties.”

For the first few years of filming, Hugh was convinced that the show would get cancelled so he neglected to move the family Stateside. Then, he decided that as soon as he did make the decision to bring the family, it would somehow jinx the show.

“I’m just convinced that the day we put down a deposit on a house is the day that we get cancelled. It’s just inevitable.”

“In fact, the first season I was in a hotel for the first three months because I was so convinced that we were going to be gone. I didn’t even unpack. I had a half-empty suitcase. I thought it was going to be any day now.”

“I have an apartment now and they visit and I go back when I can. If we get Thanksgiving off in November, I got four days to go back. I go when I can. There’s just a lot of flying.”

Hugh and his wife Jo have three kids: Charlie, 20, Bill, 18, and Rebecca, 15 -- all of whom have now survived years of Hugh living in LA part time. At least the pay is pretty good ($350K per episode).

Caterina Fake, along with Stewart Butterfield, had a real baby. The Flickr co-founders had a daughter yesterday. Guess where you can find the baby pictures!

Mena and Ben Trott are expecting. The Six Apart (makers of Movable Type and TypePad) co-founders were keeping it a secret, due to first-time jitters and admitted superstition. Bloggers keeping stuff quiet? They must have the willpower of a dozen mimes.
