Heath Ledger died from an accidental overdose a year ago in January and he left behind a daughter - Matilda Rose, 3 - with actress Michelle Williams. Heath's family has been very vocal about their close relationship with Williams and how much they adore Matilda.

Heath's dad, Kim Ledger said, "Michelle keeps her [Matilda] very closeted. I [don't] think she'll really know very much about the fuss of what's going on (referring to Oscar night), which I think is a good thing."

And the rumors of a rocky relationship with Michelle? Not true.

Ledger added, "We're very close with Michelle. She's going an amazing job with Matilda, and we speak all the time so we're in constant contact and always will be."

I believe Michelle wants what's best for her child, and she would never deny her a relationship with her grandparents. They are a connection to her late father and that's very important for her.

Matilda will also get all of her father's awards, including his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Lawyers for Matilda Ledger's trust and Minneapolis-based life insurance company ReliaStar, have reached a settlement on the lawsuit involving a $10 million life insurance policy that Heath Ledger took out just a few months before his accidental death last January.

Superior Court Judge Luis A Lavin declared that Matilda Rose will be protected from public scrutiny. He said, "She is not a celebrity. She is a minor child."

Matilda, 3, is the sole benefactor of her father's life insurance policy. The settlement and details are sealed to the public as per Judge Lavin. He said that while the late actor was a celebrity, his child is not, and said, "the motion is granted."

Margaret Levy, lawyer for ReliaStar said the company was pleased the case was settled "amicably" and Heath's daughter would be protected from the public's prying eyes.

Levy said, "We think that's great that she will be protected."

I'm glad they've settled - Matilda deserves that money and I'm sure Heath would be pleased that his daughter will be financially secure.

The world may have lost a great actor when Heath Ledger died last January of an accidental overdose, but actress Michelle Williams lost so much more - she still grieves the loss of her daughter's father.

In a recent interview, Williams talks about where she is a year after Heath's death.

Michelle has taken the last few months off of work, and she's still not quite ready to go back.

"Work can be great to get you through certain crises, to have something that you have to show up at and something that generally passes the time." Michelle added, she had a hard time working through the media storm following Heath's death.

"I felt burnt out, I still feel that, but I'm coming back to my wits, little by little. But ultimately I am not yet ready to work. I've actually really been enjoying not working," she laughs, just moments after she seemed to be fighting back tears. "I guess everybody enjoys that."

Michelle is focusing her attention on daughter Matilda.

The 28-year-old mother is "cooking, baking, cleaning and sewing," enjoying her time as a stay-at-home parent.

"As a young actress, you feel this intense pressure to work. Everybody says 'The time is now'. But I can be 28 and take a year off. Hopefully there'll still be something there to go back to."

She added, "Now [being a successful film actress] comes with so much baggage. It has lost its appeal for me. It used to be a refuge and now it's a hassle."

Williams doesn't like "celebrity," and enjoys living in Brooklyn. She says she feels "very detached" from Hollywood.

"I wouldn't raise [Matilda] there. For all the obvious reasons – being the daughter of…," she pauses. "Being an actor's daughter. It's a town that's about one thing and I want her to have options."

Michelle says she'd love Matilda to be a doctor, but the three year old, at this point, wants to be a cowgirl.

Williams has been romantically linked with director Spike Jonze, but didn't want to discuss that when asked.

"I don't really want to talk about that. In terms of trying to convey how you feel, you can never really say it right. I do worry too much about getting it just right."

Will she go back to acting?

Said Michelle, "I can handle sitting here chatting in a bar in Brooklyn, that's right up my alley. I just don't want to strap a film to my back – fly all over the world and show up at lots of different places with a different dress and a new hairdo.

"I'll be happy making movies for $300,000 for the rest of my life, if the roles are interesting. On that level, there'll always be something to go back to."

I wish her well. She seems so normal and grounded and I believe she'll do a great job of raising Matilda.

Heath Ledger has won a posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his amazing performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight! Ledger died a year ago January 22 from an accidental overdose, and although his family misses him greatly, he's left behind a wonderful legacy, especially for his young daughter, Matilda Rose.

In an emotional speech, Heath's family accepted the award on the behalf of their late son and his little girl, Matilda, 3, who will get the award when she turns 18.

"This award tonight .... validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted accepted by you all here, his peers, in an industry that he so loved," Ledger's father, Kim, said, accepting the Oscar on his son's behalf with Ledger's mother, Sally Bell, and the actor's sister, Kate Ledger.

"We have been truly overwhelmed by the honor and respect bestowed on him with this award," Sally Bell said.

Matilida will have quite the mantel of awards to remember her father - besides the Oscar, Heath won: A British Academy Film Award, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

The entire Ledger family arrived in the U.S. from Perth on Wednesday and they'll be spending time with Heath's 3-year-old daughter Matilda Rose and her mom, Michelle Williams. And by the sounds of it, Kim Ledger, Heath's dad, may be the one giving the acceptance speech should his son win an Oscar!

Heath's family - dad Kim, mom Sally and sister Kate and their partners and kids were spotted at the airport after arriving in the States.

Before leaving Perth, Kim Ledger said if Heath wins it could bring a bit of light to Australians in the wake of devastating bushfires in Victoria.

"Given the tragic circumstances of the last 10 days with the fires, maybe we can add a little spark of light to everybody if he manages to bring it home."

A spokeswoman for the family said, "They're very excited, they are actually quite relaxed. It's been such a difficult last 12 months for them.

"But they are in a position they feel like they can relax now and enjoy his talent and the accolades he has enjoyed."

The Joker role in The Dark Knight was Heath's last role. He's won a few posthumous awards already: A British Academy Film Award, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

At the airport, Kim Ledger said, "I'm extremely proud. You can't expect to win something like this. [The Academy] could just as easily turn left, as [it] could go right."

His daughter will have quite a legacy from her father. Matilda will also be given his Oscar (should he win) but it will be held for her (by her mother Michelle Williams) until she turns 18 as is required by the academy's rules.

Should Heath Ledger win a posthumous Oscar for his supporting role as The Joker in The Dark Knight, his 3-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose Ledger will take the award home. However, the statuette won't technically be hers until she's 18, and she must sign a contract at that time.

The academy said that the late actor's nomination and Matilda's young age made for a complicated situation - one of the most difficult they've dealt with.

Bruce Davis, executive director of the academy said, "It's complicated, because there are two different questions that have to be answered.

"First, we have to decide who gets the job of accepting the award onstage on the night of the ceremony. And then there's the question of the eventual disposition of the posthumous statuette, which may not stay with the person who accepts it."

Normally, a posthumous statuette goes to the spouse, but because Heath and Michelle Williams were never married, it would go to the oldest child.

Matilda is too young to sign the winner's agreement (a signed contract is required by all nominees that says the recipient will not resell his or her Oscar without first offering it back to the academy), so her mom, Michelle, will be legal custodian of the statuette until Matilda turns 18.

Davis added, "At that point, she may execute what we call an heir's agreement and keep the statuette forever - or, if she chooses not to do that, it will return to us."

The academy has not disclosed who will accept the award on stage, should Ledger win. It's usually a close relative or another actor who was close to the winner. Gary Oldman accepted Ledger's Screen Actors Guild last month.

Heath's family members are heading to the U.S. to visit Matilda and Michelle before the Oscar ceremonies and it's rumored that one of them may accept the award on Ledger's behalf.

Heath Ledger's family gathered at Cottesole Beach in Australia - it was a favorite place of the late actor - to remember him on the one year anniversary of his death and acknowledge his recent Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the villainous Joker in The Dark Knight.

Ledger's older sister Kate said, "We are still nursing broken hearts. Like anyone who loses a family member, it has opened our eyes to the intense suffering and painful journey that is death."

Kate, along with Heath's two half-sisters - Ashleigh Bell and Olivia Ledger - father Kim Ledger and mom Sally Bell, all gathered at the Indiana Tea Room on Cottesloe Beach.

Kate added that they appreciate the great job that Michelle Williams is doing in raising Heath's daughter, Matilda Rose, 3.

"Michelle is doing an amazing job with 'our girl' and together we will cherish every moment of her steps through life."

Younger sister Ashleigh acknowledged Heath's Oscar nod, saying, "in Heath's words, he had 'the time of his life.'"

"Although we would love to have him here with us, we are so proud and so excited on his behalf. We will take this opportunity today to honor his wonderful life and take comfort in knowing Heath will continue to touch future generations through this amazing art form.

"What an unbelievable legacy he has left for Matilda and our family," she added.

Heath's parents declined comment to the media.

The family, later, enjoyed a commemorative lunch.

January 22 marked the one year anniversary of Heath's accidental overdose in his NY apartment.

One year ago today, January 22, the world lost a great actor - Heath Ledger. A family lost a son, a brother and a daughter lost a father. Matilda Rose deserves to have a father and although her family will no doubt keep his memory alive for her, it's sad that she'll never truly get to know him. Ledger, at the age of 28, died in his NY apartment from an accidental overdose.

Grieving family members had these words after his passing:

His mom Sally said, "Our darling boy, special in so many ways to all of us. You knew you were so loved. You lived life with courage and daring and we are so grateful for the wonderful times we shared. We will be there for Matilda."

Heath's older sister Kate, who used to call him "Roast," said, "I can hardly breathe when I try to write this. We were the ultimate in soul mates. I feel both my heart and life have been torn apart. I loved our special talks, our daily chats from where ever you were in the world.

"I especially loved all the precious time we spent together. We were so fortunate to have you as long as we did. You were so many things to so many people, but to me you were just my little brother.

"There will never, ever be another 'Heath' and I think that in itself is the greatest tragedy.

"I will continue to talk with you everyday and love you just as if you were here. You will never leave my thoughts 'Roast,' ever."

Heath's dad, Kim said, "My beautiful boy, so loving, so talented, so independent, so caring, so young ... no more chess games, mate ... this is it, couldn't beat you anyway!

"My body aches for the sound of your voice, our chats, our laughs and our life and times together.

"Your truly varied artistic skills, insatiable desire to improve, and eclectic abilities set you apart from any other person on the planet ... it had only just started for you ... and for us to further enjoy. We were one, in soul and commitment. Just ... Father and Son. I will love you forever, Dad."

And the family, together wrote, "How do we describe our sudden and tragic loss? ... You were the most amazing individual, 'old soul' in a young man's body.

"You so loved us, as we dearly loved you. As a close knit and very private family unit we have observed you, so determined, yet quietly traveling in your self-styled path in life, nothing would get in your way ... no mountain too tall, no river too wide.

"You dreamed your dreams and lived them with passion and intelligent commitment. We have been privileged to accompany you on a ride through life that has simply been amazing, and through it all, we have loved each other beyond imagination.

"Your true legacy lives on in beautiful little Matilda, who will always remain in the greatest of care. Our hearts are broken."

Heath was honored posthumously with a Golden Globe for his amazing work as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

He will truly be missed by all.

Matilda Rose Ledger, 3, is a spitting image of her late father, Heath Ledger. Matilda was just two when he died, and while her memories of him will fade as she gets older, no doubt her mother Michelle Williams and other Ledger family members, will help keep his memory alive for her.

Michelle is doing her best to raise Matilda as normally as possible, but even she admits her grief after Heath's death is like a flowing river, always changing. However, she and Matlida, have come a long way since Ledger's death almost a year ago.

A pal of Michelle's tells OK!, "Matilda never really understood what happened when he died. It was heartbreaking when she asked for daddy and Michelle had to explain that he wasn't coming back."

The friend added, "Matilda's a really upbeat kid who giggles all the time. That's the one thing Michelle says will make her smile no matter what - hearing her daughter laugh."

Michelle has even found happiness with film director Spike Jonze.

"Things are getting easier, little by little, day by day," said the source. "Slowly she's coming back from the shock and heartbreak."

Heath Ledger won a posthumous 2009 Golden Globe award for "best supporting actor" for his portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight. And that very special award will go to a very special person - his 3-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose.

Ledger's mom, Sally Bell, says that the Golden Globe and other awards will be given to his precious daughter, Matilda.

She tells PEOPLE, "I should imagine that eventually it will be going to Matilda. At this stage she is only so young, but down the track she will have all these things. It will belong to her because she is part of him."

Bell and the rest of the Ledger family are "bursting with pride" over Heath's recognition for his part in The Dark Knight. It was a role he "loved."

She adds, "It is such a fantastic and wonderful legacy for his daughter. Matilda will have so many people who will be able to speak to her about her father's abilities and [the] respect he had in the industry. That is such a wonderful legacy to leave."

Heath's mom said it was emotional when she learned of his Golden Globe win.

"There is a lot of emotion tied up in this and we have to deal with that emotion first before we can relax and enjoy the moment, if you know what I mean."

The family has been on a "bit of an emotional rollercoaster," but Bell says that Heath would have loved the acknowledgment from his peers. "That's what meant the most to him really."

He leaves such a great legacy for his little girl.

The late Heath Ledger has won a posthumous "best supporting actor" Golden Globe award for his role as The Joker in the Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight. The award comes almost a year after his accidental death on January 22 in his New York apartment.

Chris Nolan, the movie's director, accepted the award on behalf of Heath, as the audience stood and applauded.

Said Nolan, "All of us who worked with Heath on The Dark Night accept this with an awful mixture of sadness, but incredible pride.

"For any of us to enjoy his performance he will be eternally missed, but he'll never be forgotten."

Chris said Ledger was chosen for his ability to take on edgy roles.

"For the role of The Joker I was looking for fearlessness. I needed a phenomenal actor, but he (Ledger) also had to be someone unafraid of taking on such an iconic role.

"Heath created something entirely original. It's stunning, it's captivating," Nolan said.

What a legacy Heath leaves behind for his daughter Matilda Rose. I'm sure mom Michelle Williams will make sure that their daughter learns what a wonderful actor he was but more importantly, what a wonderful, doting father he was.

Rumors swirled following the January death of Heath Ledger, that he was depressed and seemed moody and withdrawn on the set of the Batman: Dark Knight movie, however costar Gary Oldman says that is not so. And Ledger often spoke of his little girl, Matilda Rose and it was evident that she was the apple of her father's eye.

Says Oldman, who plays Lt. Jim Gordon in the film, "Because he died people want a dark story [that] he was so obsessed with the character, he was so contaminated by the Joker and he couldn't sleep and all of that stuff.

"In between takes he would sit on the curbside and smoke a cigarette and laugh and talk about his daughter Matilda. I thought he was just a beautiful kid. I thought he was just wonderful. I had a real affection for him."

Aaron Eckhart, who plays District Attorney Harvey Dent in the movie said, Heath would "gush" about his daughter, "Heath showed me pictures of [Matilda]...[he] would come in and say she did this and she did that."

Echkart said that the 28-year-old actor did relish in his role as the Joker, "He really created his look. That character - Heath loved so much. He really cared about the Joker."

Christopher Nolan, director said Heath was perfect for the role, as he was looking for someone "truly fearless."

"[For] those who knew him and those who had the privilege of working with him, it's pretty amazing the disparity between the person he was and the monster that he created for us.

"To see that being created from this very gentle person is a real testament to his skill as an actor."

Heath Ledger's uncle Hadyn Ledger had recently claimed that his late nephew may have fathered a "love child" about 11 years ago, however, that is not the case. Or so it seems.

According to the woman with whom he had allegedly had an affair, it's a baseless accusation. It was claimed that Heath was 17 and the woman was 25, and she discovered she was pregnant after their relationship ended. It's not clear if the woman is denying just the fact that the child is not his or if there was never any "affair" at all.

She told the Daily Mail, "I'm not answering anything. I think it's very, very rude that I'm being posed all of this. I really do. I can't talk about anything. You have no proof, there's no background, there's no grounds, there's no nothing."

Her husband says, "We knew it would flare up and that is the point of my talking and the simple thing is we will do a DNA test.

"I'm a step-dad, but there's nothing to hide... and if I asked [the mother] I'm sure that she wouldn't mind [to have a DNA test]."

So I guess there's no half sister for Matilda Rose. But it sure is less complicated as far as the fights over Heath's estate go.

Heath Ledger is father to Matilda Rose - with actress Michelle Williams. However, the deceased actor may have another daughter.

Ledger's family believes that their late loved one fathered a secret love child. Haydn Ledger, Heath's uncle has said he [Heath] had an affair with an older woman when he was just 17-years-old. The woman is believed to have found out she was pregnant after she and Heath ended their relationship. She was living with another man at the time of their alleged affair.

Haydn Ledger said, "There is a very real possibility that Heath was the father." As of recent, there's been a dispute over Heath's will and his reported earnings and who will actually get the bulk of his estate. If he did indeed father another child, that could put a whole new spin on the already complicated situation.

Another family member said of the alleged affair, "She had the baby. Everyone lived under the assumption that (the baby) was the daughter of the mother's boyfriend, and that is how she has been brought up." The woman in question is now married with a young family. She's quoted as saying, "I have my children to think about. I really can't comment."

I guess if this "love child" turns out to be Heath's daughter, Michelle Williams will have to decide if she wants her daughter's half sister in their lives.

It was bound to get ugly eventually, wasn't it? It always does. I mean, did anyone really believe that it was going to be enough for Heath's family to just say that 'Michelle and Matilda will be taken care of' and then march away with his entire estate?

Michelle's dad sure didn't. He's accusing the Ledger family - Ledger's dad, Kim, specifically - with concealing the extent of Heath's assets.

According to TMZ:

Michelle Williams' dad has leveled an extraordinary challenge at Kim Ledger, Heath's dad, demanding that he account for all of the late actor's assets.

Larry Williams, a famed futures trader, tells Australia's Sunday Telegraph that he thinks Kim and family "certainly haven't stated all of the assets" belonging to Heath when he died in January. Larry is "perplexed" that docs filed in a New York court said that Heath had only $145,000 in assets when he died.

"It's real simple," said Larry. "Just come clean with everything. He just has to say where the income went and where the assets were."

Which, yuck. On all counts. Yuck for the Ledgers to be at all non-disclosey about Heath's estate, when the future of his daughter is at stake. And yuck for the Williams to be publicly calling them on this. NOT going to be good for the mood at future family barbeques.

Cons Cashing In On Heath Ledger's Death

How despicable can people be? There are cons who are reportedly selling fake mementos of Heath Ledger in LA souvenir shops. There are posters from his final film The Dark Knight and "signed" photographs of the late actor - but they're not legit.

The Ledger family is said to be furious (and rightly so!) that anyone could do such a thing. A source close to the Ledgers said, "[Heath's family] are appalled and deeply saddened that Heath's name is being used to hoodwink genuine fans. They're furious that pirates are cashing in on his death."

A spokesperson for Warner Bros has indeed confirmed the claims and said to the Daily Star, "We are horrified by these acts of theft and fraud. Fans are being duped. There are no Dark Knight posters or memorabilia connected to the movie on sale yet. We are investigating how they have been pirated."

It's been just over 2 months since the Australian actor passed away at the age of 28 in his Manhattan apartment of an accidental overdose. He left behind 2-year-old Matilda with his ex-fiance, Michelle Williams.

How sad and unfortunate that anyone could do such a thing to the memory of a wonderful actor and person. Hopefully the persons responsible will be caught.

After it was revealed in Heath Ledger's will that the late actor had left everything to his parents and sister, his family quickly spoke out and stressed that the will pre-dated Ledger's relationship with Michelle Williams and the birth of their daughter Matilda. Heath's father Kim Ledger issued the following statement:

"Matilda is our absolute priority and Michelle is an integral part of our family. They will be taken care of and that's how Heath would want it to be."

Ledger's rep also wanted to dismiss any rumors that Williams and Matilda, 2, wouldn't be provided for. "The story is getting taken out of context and media is speculating that this means Matilda and Michelle will not be taken care of. I want to make it very clear nothing could be farther from the truth."

Details of Heath Ledger's will have been made public as reported by the New York Daily News. The will states that everything he owned goes to his parents, and three sisters. Ledger passed away on January 22 from an accidental overdose.

Heath had filed the three-page document back in the spring of 2003, two years before he met Michelle Williams, with whom he would eventually fall for and have a child with - Matilda Rose.

Documents reveal that the Brokeback Mountain star had less than $145,000 in New York assets at the time of his death. He had a $25,000 Toyota Prius and $20,000 in furniture and accessories. However, those amounts do not include the Brooklynn townhouse that he and Michelle shared, any cash in trust funds or any property he may have had in Australia.

An estate specialist said, "If [Ledger and Williams] had jointly held assets, those are not subject to probate. It's just not required."

Although there were no provisions for his ex fiance and his 2-year-old daughter Matilda, I'm quite certain that Heath's family will make sure they are taken care of.

Broken-hearted Michelle Williams puts on a brave face and is trying to get back to some sense of normalcy for not only herself, but for her young daughter Matilda. It's been just over a month since Heath Ledger passed away, leaving Michelle a single mom and sweet Matilda a girl who has to grow up without her daddy.

Michelle and Matilda Rose have been living in the Brooklyn brownstone after they returned from Australia following Heath's memorial. Williams and Ledger bought the brownstone together back in 2005 after the filming of Brokeback Mountain.

Williams has been left devastated by her former fiance's death and has cancelled several public appearances. She's obviously not ready to face the public yet. She seems to find some comfort in getting back to familiar surrondings and doing every day things with her daughter.
