Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, who is mom to a Down syndrome baby - her youngest son Trig, who was born last April - was "shocked" by President Obama's Special Olympics joke, that he made on the Tonight Show With Jay Leno Thursday evening.
During his conversation with Jay Leno, President Obama bragged that he'd scored 129 points while bowling at the White House, but said that score still wasn't great, calling his game, "like the Special Olympics or something."
That comment brought out the mama bear in Palin and she said, "I was shocked to learn of the comment made by President Obama about Special Olympics. This was a degrading remark about our world's most precious and unique people, coming from the most powerful position in the world."
She continued, "These athletes overcome more challenges, discrimination and adversity than most of us ever will. By the way, these athletes can outperform many of us and we should be proud of them. I hope President Obama's comments do not reflect how he truly feels about the special needs community."
The President, before the show aired, apologized - his rep said, "He thinks that the Special Olympics are a wonderful program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities from around the world."
What do you think? Was President Obama out of line or was it an innocent joke? Or is Gov. Palin being too sensitive or does she have a valid point? Or has it been blown out of proportion?
