Mom Jeans - A Poll

Posted by Whit Honea

The internet has been all abuzz about "mom jeans" this week and we're no different.

Jessica Simpson, who may or may not be pregnant, really got the proverbial ball rolling, and while I have no plans of bashing her weight I must say the pants don't help.

What we want to know is why is the mom jean popular - especially among the young Hollywood crowd, many of which aren't even pregnant?

If you're unfamiliar with the concept of the mom jean, then please watch this old SNL clip below.  You'll be glad you did.

My theory is that real (aka not emaciated) women who wear them either don't care about the effect and/or they dont' have time to examine their waist/butt/thighs/tummy in a full length mirror every day.  (I honestly go weeks without viewing myself in a full length mirror.)  And the starlets who wear them are so skinny that anything is flattering and they know it so they do it for kicks.  They can afford to be trendy and they have fun draping themselves in the latest fad because ... why not?  As for Jessica Simpson, she's pretty well considered hot stuff all around so perhaps she doesn't give a crap about a few pounds.  Last thought - I am more conscious of my weight (for health reasons) than I used to be, but there was a time in my life when I didn't realize I had put on ten pounds (well, the Freshman fifteen, which morphed in the collegiate twenty-two to be precise) and would just hastily grab a boyfriend's XL sweatshirt because it felt more comfortable without thinking about why.

Her jeans were pretty extremely high, but I don't think any jeans that don't show your buttcrack are mom jeans.  I sincerely detest low-slung jeans - I spend all day pulling at them.
