Emma Thompson says that giving birth without painkillers is the greatest thing that she's ever accomplished. All due respect, but that's a load of crap.
I say that as someone who has given birth with painkillers, and without. I don't regard the second birth as a superior accomplishment to the first, simply because it was more painful. Since when did one's willingness to endure pain - and even to endure it unnecessarily (as when one chooses to go without pain relieving medication) - become a hallmark of accomplishment? Seriously? If I forgo anaesthetic while getting my appendix removed, do I get an extra pat on the back?
Again, all due to respect to Emma, who's entitled to value whichever of her experiences she chooses, but if you ask me about my greatest accomplishments (which you didn't, I know), I'll say this: it's raising both my children. Who gives a crap how I birthed them. That they're here and they're loved and that I work hard to keep them surrounded by love, that's where the accomplishment is.
