Only hours after the results of Heath Ledger's autopsy showed his death to be accidental due to a toxic combination of prescription drugs, the Drug Enforcement Agency has gotten involved and will be investigating Ledger's death.
A statement issued this morning by the
Office of the New York City Medical Examiner declared Ledger's death
"the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone,
hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine," and
concluded the manner of death an "accident resulting from the abuse of
prescription medications." The 'abuse' was reported to have taken the form of a toxic combination of the drugs, rather than an overdose, and the DEA wants to know who prescribed those drugs, and how Heath ended up with such a toxic combination. Did the prescriptions come from one doctor, or multiple doctors? TMZ reported that it spoke to three clinical psychiatrists, all of whom said it
would be "highly unusual" and "reckless" for one physician to prescribe
this combination of meds, and suggested that more than one doctor would
have to have been involved.
According to officials, the DEA has requested copies of Ledger's
autopsy as well as the original police report from the crime scene.
