I hardly know where to start. Maybe here: I played with Polly Pockets when I was a kid. You've come a long way, baby, and that is not a compliment.
It's bad enough that Polly and her friends have turned into little hoochia-mama clones of every other tarted-up fashion doll out there, but this Jam 'n Glam Guitar ($26.90 at Amazon) really takes the cake. Apparently "Polly-Tastic" is Mattel-speak for "sexist, bizarre, and insulting." Who knew? If your kid wants a guitar, buy her a (functioning) kiddie guitar. If your kid likes to play with make-up and that's cool with you, buy her some (gentle, hypoallergenic) stuff to play with at home. Combining the two is so weird it's perverse. To wit: "The tuners pop-out to use as makeup applicators." Really? Because I'm pretty sure I saw Suzanne Vega rip out a tuner and freshen up her eye shadow at that last concert of hers I went to. Very authentic.
