Boy-rettes - Hair Accessories For Long Haired Boys

Posted by Chris Ford

I'm not quite sure what to make of this one. As a father of girls, I fully appreciate the need to keep the hair out of my kid's eyes. So I can understand how you would want to keep it out of a boy's eyes too. The Boy-rettes from Kidcosmic.com will definitely get the job done, but a barrette for a boy? I think you will have to be  the judge.

Kidcosmic.com not only sells Boy-rettes, but another hair accessory for boys called "Boy Bands" - a kind of a hair band for boys. The Boy Bands look kind of cool to me, but honestly I just can't get behind the Boy-rettes. All I can think of is the sixteen year old boy of the future mortified while looking at pictures of himself in barrettes.

The Boy-rettes come in a skull design (pictured) but there are more designs coming soon.

Skull Boy-rette, $8.50. Boy Bands (various), $13.00 from Kidcosmic.com

I really don't see what the big deal is. They're cute, they're fun, they're functional. My son's hair is not very long, but sometimes he likes to play with my hair clips, and I don't have any problem with it.

I thinks this is definitely a long shot.  Not too fond of it for boys but that's strictly my opinion.  Kind of feeling A manly Dad's comment.

You know, the first insults I recall hearing one boy call another as early as the sandbox were all nasty variations on the same theme: Gay

For some people, this is the worst possible insult you can hurl, and it starts before you have any idea what it means.  All you know is that you DO NOT want to be "that".

Well, as fate would have it, I am not gay.  But I've met a lot of people who are.  Men and women, and everywhere in between.  Along the way, I have learned that it's not a choice.  There is nothing wrong with being gay in the first place.  And people who find it necessary to use "Gay" as an insult are usually pretty pathetic themselves.

I grew up in the 70's and every kid who wasn't in military school had long hair.  Our Buddy Holly lovin' parents probably thought we all went "gay".  Of course, the rockers wore it that way and it showed an attitude of not really caring what others thought of you.  You were your own person and your hair didn't mean anything other than you didn't care to conform to the previous generation or care what they think.

True, we wouldn't have worn barrettes, but times are different.  Even more so now, kids don't give a flying turkey trot what certain adults with outdated and nasty ideas think.  Frankly, I have far greater respect for them for it that the sandbox morons who never grew up.

I can't imagine many boys who choose to have long hair are really concerned with it being in their eyes.

Having said that, I've seen some boys (teens) wearing the little girl plastic bow barrettes.  That is more of a statement than a hair care situation.
