Is This Girl Power?

Posted by Erin Behan

When I first popped over to GirlMogul's site I was pleased to find a site offering T-shirts that say things like "Future Leader of the Free World" ($11.99-$21.99) and "Computer Geek" ($12.99-$21.99). And then I took a look at the Girl Power Science Kit page. In theory, it's a good idea, but the copy hit me wrong:

"I remember my first chemistry set--I faked being sick to stay home with it. It wound up being disappointing--the directions were hard to read, the child safety tops on the chemicals to hard to use ... But now all that's changed."

The message I'm hearing here is that chemistry was too hard for girls, but now we have a science kit that makes it not-so-hard. Isn't that sweet? Even sweeter, girls can learn science by making perfume with the Perfumery Kit ($19.99) and fragrant bath gels, bath fizzers and spa lotions with the Spa Science Kit ($19.99). Am I being too sensitive here or does it seem like this is one step forward, two back, for girls?

It's a little patronizing.
