At first glance, this 10 Grain Play Pad by Small Paul ($199 from Modernseed) looks like an end table, a bookshelf, a retro microwave cart --- basically anything but its core function, which, as designer Eric Pfeiffer intended after being inspired by his own daughter's play needs, is a modern dollhouse.

Its floors aren't big enough to house Barbie and her flat mates (no problem there, right?), but Calico Critters and other wee play families will be able to move right into the two-story, molded-plywood/birch-veneer complex. And because of the flexible design, you can use it for any of the aforementioned other purposes (and then some) once the kids grow out of playing house.
