Design with David Netto: Orbit Car Seat

Posted by davidnetto

If you've ever wondered how they make orthopedic shoes cool, look at Hush Puppies. If you've ever wondered how they make a child's car seat cool, look at this one by Orbit ($899). It's a whole system that comes complete with a stroller (the seat comes out of the submarine airlock-style base and plugs in to the equally stylish wheel carriage), which IS a great idea, but it's the seat I love. There are many cool strollers out there, but this is the iPhone of car seats. I've met the people who make it and they are very nice Northern California-style low-key tech geniuses, young parents who were fed up with the options and the commitment of this particular and necessary item (you thought baby FURNITURE was bad?) to the lowest possible taste level. For me, this product is iconic.

I own the Orbit Baby and it is HANDS DOWN the best stroller/car seat on the market.  Beyond the fact that it is iconically beautiful (I get stopped on the street ALL the time), it is the function of it that has me so happy.  I watch other parents struggling with their crappy, unweildy, toturous car seats and strollers that don't fold up without a physics degree and just feel sorry for them -- this is the way to go.  I also bought the Bugaboo (for my first child) and really regret that decision now that I've seen the light..this stroller is really worth every penny.

I love the orbit with one MAJOR exception...the only storage space is the diaper bag they provide which has to be closed under the frame.  It doesn't seem large enough and the fact that you can't throw things in (literally need to take the bag out place something in it, close it, and re-attach it) seems like the only thing these guru's didn't think of.  Also, you can't hang any bags on it because it's so light weight it may tip over.  Did anyone else find these issues to be problematic?
