Band on the Diaper Run

Little Orphan Annie is not for 3 year olds, duh.

After watching Annie, Magnolia has been working some shit out.

She acts out the part where the mom gives the baby away even though she "still loves the baby"

Oh wait, this didn't even happen in the actual movie, but she actually cries while pretending.

Also, she told me yesterday (again with the real tears) that she wants new parents.  We are apparently mean to her and well, she's had us long enough so she's gonna get some new parents. (Meanwhile, I had just finished being a human vaccuum again, sucking up pieces of her snack that dropped onto the floor-bet her new parents won't do that!)

 It's a hard, knock life?

So, when you think Annie would be a great movie to show your almost 4 year old, remember that she or he might actually try to understand the concepts and that you will be having talks about why mean people like Mrs. Hannigan would be in charge of all sweet little girls anyway.

On a side, band note we are almost at tour time.  One more month.  And, I think we're going to finally get on one of those late night TV shows! Goodbye Annie, hello Conan.

She could come and stay with us in Greenpoint for a weekend. And I could make horrible pancakes, and then she would want to run home.

Parenthood has been a revisiting, for my wife and me, of childhood favorites -- books, movies.  We've kind of been astonished.  What *is* it with Disney and dead mamas?  What is it that made traumatizing children second-hand seem like a good idea at the time?

I rented Annie for my almost-4 year old, and we ended up stopping it less than a third of the way in. I remembered loving it, but I hadn't seen it in a long time (at least not since discovering Marxism in college :-) that's for sure). She kept wanting to know why people were so dirty, and I couldn't bring myself to say it was because they were poor and hungry...she also worries about who is picking her up from daycare, so I guess I should have thought it out more, that a movie about a plucky orphan wouldn't really be her speed.

my son saw part of annie when he was 3 and wondered why the kids didn't have parents...his immediate reaction was that they could be bad and do what they want then?

yes, annie can wait.

Thank you so much for taking your time to write these journals. I am a long time fan, and it is wonderful to see that you are not only great musicians, but commendable parents as well. On a side note, I also hide my girl scout cookies! It's the only way to keep the boyfriend from the eating the whole box for lunch :) Magnolia and June are beautiful. I hope that the whole family can make it to the NYC area soon. We miss you!!!

Kori! I don't know if you read these comments but I wanted to let you know that I played piano from ages 9 to 13 and quit because I hated the way I was being taught but then whenever I heard Our Constant Concern for the first time your playing inspired me to pick it up again and i've been teaching myself every since. I'm 20 now and I'm inching along slowly but if it wasn't for your records I probably would never have such a fulfilling interest. Playing is my life now.

Kori Gardner is the organ-playing half of the band Mates of State; her husband, Jason Hammel, plays drums. Known for their vocal harmonies and euphoric melodies, Mates of State has been described by critics as "unabashed joy", "honesty at its best", a "two piece with balls", and "a band that you must see live." Their daughter, Magnolia, was born in 2004 and started touring with the band at 10 weeks. Hear their latest album, Bring it Back, at www.matesofstate.com
